MARVELOUS NEW THERMOMETER

Sick child.One of the scariest moments of a new mother’s life is when she feels baby’s forehead and it feels hotter than usual.  Trying to keep calm and not panic is the first thing she thinks.  Then the next thing she thinks is “Oh, where is that thermometer.”

Once she finds the thermometer then comes the problem of how she is going to administer this thing.  Baby’s behind is the place she thinks of first.  But if baby is wiggling and screaming, it is a dangerous thing she is thinking of doing.  Wiggling and screaming babies make it almost impossible to administer a thermometer. BABY BOTTLES! PLASTIC OR GLASS?

Up until a time when Grandma Bugpuddles was raising her children many years ago, there was no question about what to use.    Mothers nursed their babies; or if they had no milk of their own because of some illness or fever, then they purchased from a nursing woman who had more than enough of her own milk and was willing to share with others.  Some women actually earned a meager living wage as a “wet nurse.”  In still later times the purchased mother’s milk was sold in glass bottles.

Today’s mommies who have chosen to breast-feed baby will have no concern about the melamine threat. For those of you dear gals who have found it a physical or financial necessity to feed baby a formula – you will wish to keep an eye on the news about melamine. Instructions from child psychiatrists and psychologists regarding the where, the how, and the when of sleep time for babies has changed drastically over the years.  Some of the “experts” are still rummaging around looking for the correct answers.  It seems they may have been looking everywhere for the wisdom except in “mommie’s heart.”  (more…)

DIAPER RASH

The scourge of new babies until recent years has been diaper rash, medically referred to as “Dermatitis.” It is a rash that ranges from mild to very painful for babies and toddlers. Although the outside layer of a baby’s skin normally forms a protective barrier that prevents infection, one of the primary causes of dermatitis in the diaper area is prolonged skin contact with wetness. (Hello-o-o-o) When baby’s bottom is allowed to stay in wet diapers too long, the oils are stripped away and the outer layer of delicate skin is damaged, and obviously there is increased susceptibility to infection by bacteria or yeast. Wow!! Did you know that there are four million, seven hundred ten thousand places to look on Google for Green Diapers? Now, I know that Green Diapers are becoming enormously popular because of the fact that our landfills are being overcrowded with disposable diapers that will never, never, never in a million years decompose. Did you know that? Well, what I didn’t know is that there is a huge movement out there by new parents in the world-at-large who are trying to remedy the environmental issue of too many indestructible diapers filling up the landfill holes in the earth.
