Baby BugPuddles guide to Pregnancy, Newborn, Baby & Toddlers.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have Rosie the Robot watching over your baby as you work around the house? Well since Rosie is not quit available yet, the next best this is a Baby Monitor.
Is a Baby Monitor a “must have?’ No, but it is one of those items that once you get one you’ll probably wonder how you ever lived without it. But with so many models and features to choose from it can be a little overwhelming.
There are essentially two basic types of Baby Monitors: Audio and Audio/Video. Both work by transmitting radio frequency from the base unit near the baby to the portable unit near you. These frequencies however may be interfered with from common household items like florescent lights, appliances, cordless phones, cellular phones and even your wireless home network. The most common of these items run at 2.4 megahertz.
So what do you want to look for in an Audio Baby monitor? First look for a model that offers you the ability to change channel frequencies. This way you can try different settings to extend your range, or just get a clearer signal. If you have cordless phones in you home, look to see what frequency they run on. Is it 900mz or 2.4mz or is it 5.8mz? You will have much better results if you find a Baby Monitor that does not run on the same frequencies as your phone.
Audio/Video Monitors can ad a whole new dimension to keeping an eye on baby. It was not to long ago that the only way to monitor your little one with video was to spend a lot of money and you had to keep checking back to your fixed monitor location. Those days are gone. Sure, you can still setup an elaborate video system, but why? You can now carry around a portable video unit that offers the same results at a fraction of the price.
So, when it comes to purchasing a baby monitor remember: choose one that operates on a different frequency from other wireless products in your home. Does the Baby monitor run just on batteries, or is it rechargeable and last but not least, check the return policy of the unit. If the unit does not perform in your environment, take it back a find one that will.
